Caribbean Cruise

The 7-day cruise was an experience I will never forget – in more ways than one! Jonathan’s Mom, Sister, Grandmother, Aunt and I embarked on this cruise to celebrate said Grandmother’s 80th birthday.

As a side note, a cruise has never been on my vacation lists.  Somehow being stuck on a ship in the middle of the ocean has never really appealed to me. Needless to say, I wasn’t sure what to expect for this week.

The Caribbean cruise stopped in Puerto Rico, St. Kitts and St. Barts with about 3 days at sea.  After getting over day 1 which was spent nursing sea sickness, I was magically cured and got used to the serious turbulence on the ship. It was like getting a work out trying to walk straight on this ship in heels (and even in flip flops I guess).  Some days it felt like you were walking up and running down endless ramps on the deceivingly flat ship.  Through the week we probably spent 50% of the time eating, 10% exploring cities, 20% drinking, and 20% sun bathing and dancing.  Not a bad way to spend life!

I must say though, the food was absolutely amazing.  I was expecting the crowds of people, the cheesy activities and even the sea sickness, but was completely blown away by the quality and service of the food.  I was surprised (and relieved) that I didn’t gain an extra 10 pounds after walking off the ship.  After having 4 course meals, afternoon tea, and huge breakfasts, I thought for sure the scales would be tipped, and not in my favour.  I loved the idea of having the same table every night, served by the same waiter, sommelier, and assistant.  They got to know what we liked and even gave us some magic tricks for after dinner treats.

The throngs of people were probably my deal breaker (what can you expect when you’re in an enclosed area with 2,500 people other people).  You mostly felt the sheer number of people when you’re frantically searching the upper deck for a lounger to lay on to ease the effects of the sea sickness that you’re currently feeling.  But I guess while walking around the ship during the day, you don’t run into thatttt many people.

All in all, it turned out to be a fun experience.  Definitely something you want to do with a group of people.  The key is to embrace the insanity and laugh your way through it.  You’ll realize that you’re completely relaxed, have discovered the best place for people watching ever, and completely full to the brim 24/7!

xx
